Tyson Gay: 9.68 seconds
In competing at the US Olympic trials on Sunday Tyson Gay of Lexington, Kentucky ran a 100 meters faster than anyone--ever, in history.

But his time (9.68 seconds) doesn't count as a world record. The reason? It was run with the help of a "too-strong" tailwind. The wind was blwoing at 4.1 meters per second, and for record purproses the wind cannot blow above 2.0.

Gay still qualifies for his first Summer Games team, though. He is competing (and hoping to win) the 100 and 200 at the Beijing Olympics.

The previous fastest time was 9.69 second in 1996 by Obadele Thompson.
