Famous Naturalized Texans
These Famous Texans were not born in Texas, but got there as fast as they could! Austin
Richard S. "Kinky" Friedman was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1944. He is a singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, politician and former columnist for Texas Monthly. He and his family moved to a ranch in central Texas during his childhood He graduated from Austin High School in Austin, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966.


Darrell Royal
was born in Hollis, Oklahoma on July 6, 1924. He is a College Football Hall of Fame member, and is the most successful football coach, in terms of wins, in University of Texas Longhorn history.


Sandra Bullock - Born: 26 July 1964 Birthplace: Arlington, Virginia and like many of the men from Virginia who helped Texas win it’s independence, Sandra got here as fast as she could.  It is rumored that she fell in love with Texas and Texans while filming Hope Floats with Harry Connick, Jr.  Much of the film was shot on location in Smithville Texas which is southeast of Austin.  Other movies include Speed, Miss Congeniality and the Secret of the Ya YA Sisterhood.
 

Brownwood
Bob Denver was born in New Rochelle, New York on January 9, 1935 and died on September 2, 2005. He was an actor best known for his role as "Gilligan" on the television series Gilligan's Island. He was raised in Brownwood, Texas.

Crawford
George W. Bush was born in New Haven Connecticut on July 6, 1946. He is the 43rd and current President of the United States of America, inaugurated on January 20, 2001. He served as the 46th Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000 before being elected in 2000 and re-elected in 2004 as President. He was raised in Midland and Houston, Texas. His home is in Crawford, Texas.

Dallas
Troy Aikman was born in West Covina, California on November 21, 1966. He is a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and currently a television sportscaster for the Fox network. Aikman was the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, held by the Cowboys. His 90 wins in the 1990s is the most by any quarterback in any decade.


Michael Jerome Irvin
  was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 5, 1966. He is a former wide reciever for the Dallas Cowboys and former broadcaster for ESPN's NFL Countdown. He is regarded as one of the most successful wide receivers in the NFL’s history.


Edward “Too Tall” Jones
was born in Jackson, Tennessee on February 23, 1951. He is a former defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys (1974-1978;1980-1989). e was named NFL Defensive MVP in 1982, All Pro in 1981 and 1982, and played in 16 playoff games, including three Super Bowls. Jones played on three NFC champion teams and the 1978 Super Bowl winner. He retired in 1989 after 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He and two others are are the only players in Cowboys history to play for the franchise for 15 seasons


Norah Jones
was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 30, 1979. She is a singer-songwriter, musician and occasional actress. She spent her childhood with her mother, who moved to the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, Texas, when she was four.


Charley Frank Pride
was born in Sledge, Mississippi on March 18, 1938. He is among the most successful country music singers of all time. During his career, he has had 36 number-one hits. Currently lives in Dallas, and is a big Texas Rangers fan.

Emmitt Smith was born in Pensacola, Florida on May 15, 1969. He is a former Running Back for the Dallas Cowboys (1990-2002) and Arizona Cardinals (2003-2004). Smith is a three time Super Bowl champion and the NFL's all time rushing leader. He is the only running back to ever have won a Super Bowl championship, the NFL Most Valuable Player award,  the NFL rushing crown, and the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award all in the same season. He currently lives in a suburb of Dallas, TX.


Roger Staubach
was born in Cincinatti, Ohio on February 5, 1942. He is a businessman, Heisman
Trophy winner and former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. He led the team to four Super Bowl appearances, with two victories. He was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VI. He was named to the Pro Bowl six times during his ten-year NFL career. He retired from football in 1979, as the then highest rated passer of all time at 83.4, and was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985

Randy White was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 15, 1953.  He is a former middle linebacker and defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys (1975-1988). He accumlated 1,104 tackles (701 solo) and 111 sacks.

DeSoto
Ellis Hobbs III was born in Niagara Falls, New York on May 16, 1983. He is a cornerback for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He attended DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas, where he was a standout in football and track.

Garland
Johnny Yong Bosch was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 6, 1976. He is television actor, best known for his role as Adam Park in the Power Rangers television series, as well as for his voice over work in numerous anime. He was raised in Garland, Texas.


LeAnn Rimes
was born in Jackson, Mississippi on August 28, 1982. She is a country music singer. At the age six, her family moved to Garland, Texas.

Greenville
Ben Kweller was born in San Francisco, California on June 16, 1981. He is a rock musician. Raised in Greenville, Texas.

Houston
George H.W. Bush was born in Milton, Massachuset on June 12, 1924. He was the 41st President of the United States, serving from 1989 to 1993. After graduating from Yale, he went into the Texas oil exploration business. In 1964, Bush won the Republican Party's nomination for the U.S. Senate from Texas. Currently lives Houston, Texas.


Walter Cronkite
was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on November 4, 1916. He is a now-retired American broadcast journalist, best known as anchorman for the CBS Evening News. He attended junior high school at Lanier Junior High School (now Lanier Middle School) and high school at San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas. He attended university at The University of Texas at Austin.

Mary Tyler "Molly" Ivins was born in Monterey, California on August 30, 1944, and died on January 31, 2007) was an American newspaper columnist, political commentator, and best-selling author from Austin, Texas. She was raised in Houston, Texas.

Jesse H. Jones was born in Robertson County, Tennessee on April 5, 1874 and died on June 1, 1956. He was a Houston, Texas politician and entrepreneur. He served as United States Secretary of Commerce from 1940 to 1945


Dr. Phil McGraw
was born in Vinita, Oklahoma on  September 1, 1950.  He is a three-time Emmy Award-nominated television personality who is the host of the popular American psychology TV show Dr. Phil. He grew up in the oilfields of North Texas, where his father was an equipment supplier.


B.J. (Billy Joe) Thomas
was born in Hugo, Oklahoma on August 7, 1942. He grew up around Houston, Texas, and is a country and pop music/soft rock/easy listening singer

Iola
Chris Andersen was born in Long Beach, California on July 7, 1978. He is a former NBA basketball player. His swooping dunks, shot-blocking skills and rare athleticism for his size earned him the nickname "The Birdman". He grew up in Iola, Texas and was undrafted following a career at Blinn College (he originally dropped out of the University of Houston). He began his professional career in the NBDL, going on to play for the Denver Nuggets and the New Orleans Hornets.


Katy
Clint Patrick Black was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on February 4, 1962. He is a country music singer, songwriter, producer and occasional actor. He grew up in Katy, Texas. Married to Lisa Hartman Black.

Lubbock
Spencer Wells was born in Georgia on April 6, 1969. He is a geneticist and anthropologist, and an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society. He leads The Genographic Project. He was raised in Lubbock and went to UT

Orange
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown was born in Vinton, Lousiana on April 18, 1924, and died on September 10, 2005. He was a blues musician. Raised in Orange, Texas.

Post
Floyd Tillman was born in Ryan, Oklahoma on December 8, 1914, and died in Bacliff, Texas on August 22, 2003. He was country musician who in the 1930s-40s helped create the western swing and honky tonk styles of music. He grew up in Post, Texas.

Rusk
Johnny Horton was born in Los Angeles, California on April 30, 1925, and died on November 5, 1960. He was a country music singer who was most famous for his semi-folk, so-called "saga songs". He was raised in Rusk, Texas.

San Marcos
Lauren Lane was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on February 2, 1961. She is an actress, best known for her role as C.C. Babcock on the Nanny. She raised in Texas. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington. She is currently a professor in the Theatre Department at Texas State University.

West Texas
Brett Halliday was born in Chicago, Illinios on July 31, 1904, and died on February 4, 1977. He was an American mystery writer, best known for the long-lived series of Mike Shayne novels he wrote, and later commissioned others to write. Dresser wrote non-series mysteries, westerns and romances under the names Asa Baker, Matthew Blood, Kathryn Culver, Don Davis, Hal Debrett, Anthony Scott, Peter Field, Hal Debrett, Don Davis, and Anderson Wayne. He grew up in West Texas.
